He attended <strong>St Olaves Grammar School<\/strong> in Orpington, Kent, and was a chorister at the <strong>Queen&#8217;s Chapel of the Savoy<\/strong>, London (now the King&#8217;s Chapel of the Savoy), where he trained under the Master of the Music, Dr William Cole LVO.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A writer, poet, priest, physician (retd), musician, and former Major in the <strong>Royal Army Medical Corps<\/strong> (RAMC), Robert was a <strong>General Medical Practitioner<\/strong> for over 30 years, was ordained as a priest in the <strong>Church of England<\/strong>, where he served as an Assistant Curate in the Diocese of Lincoln. He is now a <strong>Fellow<\/strong> at <strong>St John&#8217;s College, Durham<\/strong>, and a <strong>Fellow<\/strong> of the <strong>Institute for Medical Humanities<\/strong>, at Durham University, with academic interests in medical humanities, theology, and literature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Robert is the author of six books. His first collection of poetry\u00a0<em><strong>A Journey with Time<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0was published in 2008. An academic text\u00a0<em><strong>The Law and Medicine: Friend or Nemesis?<\/strong><\/em><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>appeared in 2013, followed by his debut novel\u00a0<em><strong>Lamplight in the Shadows<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>in 2015. Robert\u2019s second collection of poetry\u00a0<em><strong>On Quarry Beach<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0was published in 2017, and a second academic text<strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><em><strong>The Healing Enigma: The Physician-Priest in the 21st Century<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0in 2018. His latest book, <strong><em>Preserving the Penultimate: The Church and Healthcare in the light of Bonhoeffer&#8217;s and Schweitzer&#8217;s Theology and Praxis, <\/em><\/strong>is due to be released in October 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The winner of the&nbsp;<strong>Lincoln Book Festival Prize<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>for Fiction<\/strong> in 2005 and the&nbsp;<strong>Fathom Prize<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>for Poetry<\/strong> in 2010, Robert is currently working on the manuscript for a book of anecdotes from his time in general practice, as well as planning his second novel, a third collection of poetry, and conducting research involving the life and work of the Russian physician and writer, Anton Chekhov.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Robert is a <strong>Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery<\/strong> (MBBS, London), a <strong>Master of Laws<\/strong> (Medical Law &amp; Ethics, De Montfort) and a <strong>Master of Arts<\/strong> (Spirituality, Theology &amp; Health, Durham). In 2023, he was made a <strong>Doctor of Philosophy<\/strong> of Durham University, for his thesis titled &#8221;<em>Preserving and Redeeming the Penultimate Through Healthcare: A Theological Foundation as visualised through the dual lens of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Albert Schweitzer\u2019<\/em>. He also holds a Diploma of Higher Education in Theology, Ministry and Mission (Durham), a Certificate in Humanities (Open), and Certificates in Literary Theory and Critical Reading (Oxford).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2005, Robert was granted the <strong>Freedom of the City of London<\/strong> as a Liveryman of the <strong>Worshipful Society of Apothecaries<\/strong>.
